Ara Pacis Museum
The Ara Pacis Museum is the first work of architecture built in the historic center of Rome since the fall of fascism today. The project was written by Richard Meier & Partners Architects, author of some of the most important museums of the second half of the twentieth century.
The Ara Pacis is one of the finest examples of classical art. Its construction was passed by the Senate in 13 BC honor for the return of Augustus the provinces of Gaul and Spain, where over three years Emperor had consolidated the power of Rome and its staff, opened new roads, founded colonies. The altar was built along the Via Flaminia, the border north of Campus Martius, but the nature of the alluvial and flood of the Tiber, by depositing layers of silt over the area, soon led to the underground air, which memory is completely lost. The reconstruction of the monument was decided in view of the anniversary, in 1937 / 8, the millennium of the birth of Augustus. Entrusted archaeologist Giuseppe Moretti, it was physically realized in the summer of 1938 in Hall of Ripetta road, built in haste from a design by Ballio Morpurgo. Settled along the Tiber, the Ara Pacis risked being compromised by the inadequacy of its container, which could not be isolated from traffic exhaust gases from heat, moisture or dust in slope and finally fats and acids that are deposited on its marble and the plaster. The new museum complex was therefore designed with a view to the preservation of the monument, both environmentally and in the seismic system. Address: Lungotevere in Augusta HOURS: Tuesday to Sunday hours: 9.00-19.00 Open December 24 and 31 hours: 9.00-14.00 Closed on Monday, January 1, May 1 and December 25 Phone: 0039 060608 from 9.00 to 22.30 Website: www.arapacis.it Email: info@arapacis.it
