Sperlonga: tourism, sea and holidays
In the territory there are traces of from the Upper Paleolithic. According to tradition the city stood at Sperlonga Amyclae, founded by the Spartans. In Roman arose within numerous villas, the most famous is that of the Emperor Tiberius, including a modified natural cave decorated with sculptures of the cycle of the Homeric hero Odysseus.
The villas were also centers of production for the fishing industry (tanks for breeding). The ruins of the imperial villa was used as a refuge in the sixth century, but the town developed around a castle on the promontory of St. Magnus (65 m), a spur of Aurunci to defend against incursions of the Saracens by sea, taking the name from the numerous natural caves in the area (speluncae). The name of castrum Speloncae appears in a document of the tenth century, the castle consisted of a small church dedicated to St. Peter, patron saint of fishermen. Around the castle grew progressively country in concentric circles. In the eleventh century the town was surrounded by walls of which traces remain of two doors: "door" or "Port Carrese" and "Porta Marina", which causes the arms of the Caetani family.
