The Renaissance in Rome
From the early fifteenth century Rome back to recover the supremacy which in previous years was missing. Rome became the world center of Christianity, the Papacy folded the administration to the ecclesiastical bureaucracy, developing a political role that made her one of the most important cities in the world panorama of the period.
If Florence was the center of humanism and the Renaissance, Rome, meanwhile, was returned to the beauty and grandeur of the past. Pope Julius II invested enormous resources in order, designing the landscaping of the Sistine Chapel, whose decoration was entrusted to Michelangelo, and the construction of St. Peter's Basilica, to name but two of intervention that marked the history. But the huge sums which were used for the immense work underway in the capital, did not go unnoticed or were found without consequences. Practices in use now for years and not only hated by large sections of the population, but also much of the clergy, led to terrible consequences and irreparable. The so-called "sale of indulgences' triggered the ire of Martin Luther, who placed himself in direct conflict with the church of Rome, condemning these methods and causing the split that led to the Reformation. They are also the years when, in the fight for supremacy in Europe between the Habsburgs and the Valois, Rome was set on fire by Landsknecht, when in 1527 it witnessed the infamous Sack of Rome, an event that three days brutalizes the city. Rome suffered incalculable losses in terms of both economic and human lives. About 20,000 victims met their death in the tragic event and the town also suffered heavy damage to its artistic heritage. In the same year an epidemic pestilence produced the disappearance of five people. The city of Rome, as after any other disaster which struck within its walls, will take over the role that always deserves. Passed the wave Renaissance became the center of the Baroque around 1600 when several artists invited to the city, gave an enormous contribution in transforming the architectural center in large part can still be seen today. Arising in this period, the Trevi Fountain, the colonnade of St. Peter's Basilica, and many other buildings and monuments that changed the face substantially, contributing decisively to characterize the appearance
