VATICAN MUSEUMS
Nucleus, a collection of ancient sculptures, was established by Julius II (1503-13). The idea of the museum was conceived by Clement XIII (1758-69), who with the assistance of Winckelmann had set up the Profane Museum. With Clement XIV (1769-74) and Pius VI (1775-99) was the Pio Clementino Museum in 1807-10 and, under Pius VII, is prepared by Canova Museum Chiaramonti.
In 1822 will open the New Wing. By Gregory XVI will open in 1837 the Gregorian Etruscan Museum, the Gregorian Egyptian in 1839, in 1844 the Lateran Profane (Gregorian Profane today) and then the Pio Christian. In the early decades of the 900 are set up the Ethnological Missionary Museum and Art Gallery opened to the public. In 1973 Paul VI opened the Historical Museum and the Collection of Modern Religious Art.
Pio Clementino Museum - Collects specimens of ancient sculpture as the Apollo Belvedere (130-140 AD), the group of Laocoon (I cent. AD) Apollo and Venus Sauroktonos Cnidus, the colossal head of Jupiter. Noteworthy are two porphyry sarcophagus of Constance and St. Helena, Constantine's mother and daughter, respectively.
Chiaramonti Museum - home to many Roman sculptures, like the statue of Ganymede, a colossal head of Athena, a portrait of Tiberius, a relief with the Three Graces (I cent. AD). In the Lapidary Gallery raccoltenumerose are pagan and Christian inscriptions and statues in the Braccio Nuovo wound as the Amazon, the Doryphorus, the enormous statue of Nile, the Augustus of Prima Porta.
Gregorian Etruscan Museum - Contains numerous exhibits coming mainly from the nineteenth century excavations carried out in southern Etruria, like the tomb-Regolini Galassi. Exposed some sarcophagi and a rich collection of Greek vases, Etruscan and Italic. To note the sepulchral stele bilingual Todi with dual registration, in Latin and Gallic (second century BC.).
Gregorian Egyptian Museum - Designed by an early Italian Egyptologists, Ungarelli father, a collection of statues of deities or characters of the royal family, as his mother and sister of Ramses II, sarcophagi, mummies and funerary items of furniture. Also rebuilt the statuary decoration of Villa Adriana in Tivoli.
Gregorian Profane Museum - Exhibits Greek and Roman sculptures as three fragments of the Parthenon in Athens, the head of Athena (460 BC), the Altar of Vicomagistri (I cent. AD) and two large reliefs depicting the arrival of Vespasian in Rome Departure of the Emperor Domitian. Present some sarcophagi with mythological subjects. Among the copies stands bronze group of Athena and Marsyas.
Pio Christian Museum - collects materials from excavations of the Roman catacombs, a number of sarcophagi (III-V cent. AD), including a cast of Junius Bassus sarcophagus and the statue of the Good Shepherd (third century. AD).
Missionary Ethnological Museum - Documents the events and religious cults of other continents. Of great importance Aztec sculpture of the fifteenth century. The Indian sculptures of Hindu deities, ritual masks from Oceania and Africa.
Collection of Modern Religious Art - housed in the halls of the Borgia Apartment, decorated by Pinturicchio, featuring works by Rosai, Boccioni, Balla, De Chirico, Guttuso Manzù.
Superior Galleries - The Gallery of the Candelabra collect archaeological material from the Roman era, such as the sculptural group of Ganymede and the Eagle (II cent. AD) and the statue of Artemis. The Tapestry Gallery exhibits Flemish tapestries (XVI century). Er Oman (seventeenth century).. The Gallery of Maps displays 40 panels dedicated to the territory of Italy carried out in 1580-83.
Museum of the Vatican Library - hosts several examples of sacred art: the Aldobrandini Wedding Hall, with frescos of Roman times the Room of the papyri, gilded glass with the early Christian period, the Sistine Hall with frescoes by Cesare Nebbia and other artists, the Salt Pauline; Hall and Alexandrine Clementine Gallery, with sketches by Bernini.
Picture Gallery - contains works dating from the twelfth to the eighteenth century., Made by Pietro Lorenzetti, Simone Martini and Giotto, Beato Angelico, Masolino from Panicale, Filippo Lippi, Perugino, Pinturicchio, Titian, Veronese, Giulio Romano, Ludovico Carracci, Caravaggio (Deposition of Christ), Poussin, G. Reni, Guercino, O. Gentileschi. Complaints also used clay models for the sculptures by Bernini's Chapel of the Sacrament and the Chair of St. Peter and tapestries made in Brussels on 10 drawings by Raphael.

The ticket entitles the Vatican Museums to visit the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel only on the day of issue and can visit within the next 5 days (including the day of issue), the Historical Museum and the Noble Flat Lateran Apostolic Palace in the Piazza San John Lateran.
